![]() So it's got this cohesive, harmonious architecture. To be able to take an American into Sainte-Chapelle… the King of France, 800 years ago, built it to house what he thought was the crown of thorns, one of the greatest relics in Europe. I have spent 30 years taking Americans around Europe. I probably ended up taking a class with a great professor, or I traveled with some good tour guides. Who would want to take class? Fifty hours learning about this stuff and then I don't know what happened. We got out the course catalog, as you do every quarter and look through the classes and we played a game called “What's the most boring class in this whole catalog?” For me, it was a slam dunk: European art history. Steves: No, actually I vividly remember sitting in the dorm in the cafeteria with my school buddies. When you're looking into the eyes of David, in a very narrow sense, he's sizing up the giant and saying, “I can take this guy.”īhatia: I know that your trips to Europe as a young person really inspired you to pursue this, but I understand that art history was not one of your favorite subjects growing up. ![]() That's the Bible story: The shepherd boy kills the giant. Most of us know what David by Michelangelo looks like: He's a naked shepherd boy with a sling over his shoulder and he's looking out and he's sizing up the giant. And use that to make the world a better place and to live life more fully. And that is not a repudiation of God, it's just a recognition that the best way to glorify God is not to bow down in church all day long, but to recognize the talents and the skills that God gives you. To me, the Renaissance is about humanism. There's just a lot of nudity in this art, and celebrates - part of it - is humanism. If you couldn't show a nude body here and there, you couldn't do a series on art. Our team is on a little crusade to help Americans recognize that there's nothing dirty about the human body. For most markets it doesn't really matter, but there are markets in the United States that will not show this until after bedtime, so kids don't have to see this. They're talking about big concepts, but, believe it or not, right now in 2022 we still have to have lawyers at the network go through the shows and flag nudity. Artists throughout time have appreciated portraying human beings in the nude because it makes it timeless and it makes it bigger than one mortal. It was carved out of marble 500 years ago and some people are offended by that or women who are naked. Steves: We've long had a "problem with nudity" when we show Michelangelo’s David. It's fascinating, but I have to ask, since there’s a bit of nudity in the artwork, has that been a problem for viewers? Ideastream Public Media’s Kabir Bhatia: There's a section on Renaissance goddesses, and you're comparing them to ancient works and how they're related. But for the show I just wanted people to sit there and enjoy this beautiful cavalcade of art. There's the script all of the dates and the names and the travel ideas and so on. At the end of the show, it says if you want a list of all the art we saw and if you want specifics about seeing them, just go to my website. I was careful not to clutter the script up with a lot of names and dates. Rick Steves: We had to just be very selective about what we covered and very succinct. Originally a 12-hour script, he and writing partner Gene Openshaw focused it into six episodes covering the “ Stone Age to Ancient Greece,” “ Ancient Rome,” “ The Middle Ages,” " The Renaissance,” “ Baroque” and “ The Modern Age.” He wanted to give viewers a sense of the story of Europe through its art. ![]() Now, his new mini-series "Art of Europe" looks at the masterpieces he's experienced over the past three decades. You might want to give Scapple a try if you are looking for a free form note taking application. I’ve yet to explore how much I can get the map canvas to expand, but I can image an hour lecture would have to get rather large. ![]() While the application does possess an page-setup dialog, it seems to apply only to a document when it is printed. The larger the map, then, the larger the “page-size” will be in an exported PDF or image file. A Scapple expands expands as nodes are placed near its edges. One interesting aspect of a Scapple map is the notion of the “page.” Interesting because it’s actually non-existent. When printed without the “shrink to fit” option enabled, this map would take up 9 sheets of of paper. As is apparent in the example, images are also able to be dragged on to the map and connected just like any other node. I’ve included an image of a test map which I created in Scapple 6. The structure of the document is bound only by the imagination of the user. Unlike a typical mind-map, however, these links are visual only. Ideas can be dragged on top of each other, however, and modifier keys will either create arrows in various directions or dotted lines 5. In Scrapple, unless ideas are specifically bound together in a background shape, each idea is considered independent every other idea on the canvas. Created, in fact, by Literature and Latte – the same company which develops the greatest writing application ever, Scrivener. Scapple is the name of this brilliant piece of software. I was so excited as I explored it’s capabilities I almost wanted to go out and sign up for a community college course, just so I could try it out while taking notes 4. ![]() On the surface it works like many mind-mapping applications, but in reality, it’s completely free form. This week, however, I picked up a piece of software which finally works the way my mind thinks. A pen and paper simulation on a tablet is nice, but just not the same. ![]() Though, as you can see by the image to the right, I have tried my note-taking method using various paper-simulation apps and a stylus. In fact, I’d never found a piece of software which allowed me to create a completely free-form note-map on a computer which was as easy as paper 3. These, after all, need to show up as being only semi-connected to the structure of the map. Structured maps also aren’t great at creating “asides” which contain personal reflections, or thoughts which the user wants to go back and explore at a later time. Going back later to connect ideas which did not appear near each other in a lecture, for example, is hard to do in a typical mind-map app – especially if the connection is one the user makes, thus breaking it completely out of the logical structure created by the map. Mind-maps, however, aren’t great at dealing with a free-form flow. I use such maps often, particularly iThoughts on iOS and OS X. ![]() This is something at which most mind-map apps really excel – they brilliantly and quickly create a hierarchy of structure in order to map an idea. Computers are all about logic 2, and logic depends on having a well-defined structure. That’s not a knock on mind-mapping software, which I love, it’s simply pointing out a limitation of a computerized mind-map. Nowadays we’d call it “mind-mapping,” but the form I ended up using was much more free-form than the types of mind maps you get from most software packages nowadays. The result was a note-taking method which was unique to me, but looked the way my mind worked 1.Įssentially, my college notes are drawings of boxes, filled with ideas and connected with arrows which denoted the flow of the lecture. When I was in college, I was finally able to break free from the “make sure you use proper outlining form for your notes if you want full credit” mind-set and find my own way to process class information. ![]() ![]() Key Tracks: “Nobody But You” / “Changes” / “Change The World”Īrtists With Similar Fire: St. ![]() At 67, let’s hope that Bradley’s honesty is something we’ll get for many years to come. I’ve been to pizza heaven, and its name is Inferno. “I’ve been known to eat two of them myself,” Conte told me. With its beautifully crunchy dough and satisfyingly fresh toppings, it begged for another bite, and maybe another order. The kid in me couldn’t help but poke at it as I eyed a piece of the pie that offered a healthy mix of San Marzano tomatoes, Fior Di Latte mozzarella, olive oil, and basil. In between was the main event: My margherita pizza bore a huge, trademark Neapolitan air-bubble blister. (We’re still talking about the house-made ricotta cheesecake and affogato.) We started with a healthy sampling of flavorful and seasonal, locally sourced appetizers-roasted cauliflower, a beet salad, and burrata-while drinking Brookville IPAs and white wine, and we ended with an equally fantastic dessert. On a recent Friday night, our party of two sat at the six-person counter. Marinara, smoked prosciutto and black truffle are among six choices on the menu, and locals know to add organic egg topping to any pizza they order. The thin, light, crispy-bottomed pie is a true elevation of the pizza form.
